ARTIST STATEMENT

To Thanistha, preservation means upholding the existence of the objects. With interest in the idea of mending and preserving intrinsic beauty, Thanistha deliberately works with broken ceramic objects such as ornate sculptures, vases, and plates. She delicately puts the broken pieces back together by sewing them up with thread. The intertwined metallic strands weave through the fractured surface while bonding the breakages to recreate a complete form. Her work draws a parallel of hard and inflexible versus soft and delicate qualities in the same object.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Thanistha is interested to explore the idea of transformation. Her current body of work emphasizes on the rebonding of broken fragile material such as ceramic plates, pots, and vases inspired by the Japanese art of “Kintsugi” (golden joinery).

Kintsugi is an art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of using powdered gold, Thanistha deploys her Thai heritage craftmanship by connecting the broken pieces with hand sewn technique. She lets the flow and the fluidity of the metallic threads dictate the final shape of the mended ceramic. Her artwork touches on the contemporary visual cues as well as the prevalent idea of repurposing and upcycling.
