Thailand’s National Artist 2009, Visual Arts (painting)
Born in Bangkok in 1948, Professor Preecha Thaothong graduated from Pohchang Academy of Art. He received B.F.A (2nd class honor) and M.F.A. in painting from Silpakorn University. He was awarded a scholarship to further his study at L’ Academia di belle Arte, Italy. He was a full time art instructor at the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University until his retirement.
Prof. Preecha Thaothong is an artist with a modern thinking. He creates artwork that is a balance between the conservation of tradition and a progression of modern ideas. The result is a unique visual aesthetics in a contemporary timeframe.
Over the last 40 years, Prof. Preecha has made significant academic contributions and has undertaken research in the art domain. His unique creation is the juxtaposition of light and shadow in a Western style with traditional skills of Thai art to convey the message Buddhism philosophy in faith, peace, as well as the guiding light in social development. He was bestowed the highest recognition as Thailand’s National Artist with this origination.
