ARTIST STATEMENT

In “Cathedral of Light”, Noppanan Thannaree expresses his reverence for light in paintings that capture the unique qualities of natural light, which has provided value, as a vital catalyst of life, and meaning, as a symbol of the connection between humans and nature, to civilizations since antiquity. Light is sacred to Noppanan, whose transposition of its beauty into art is scaffolded on an exploration of the indivisibility of humanity and nature, as well as the relationship between the real and the abstract.

During an artist residency in New South Wales, Australia, Noppanan observed the metamorphosis of light as it danced across the majestic wilderness of Wollemi National Park over the course of each day. There, the light possessed qualities he had not seen anywhere else and illuminated our profound connection to nature, becoming sacred to him from then on.

From the light of foreign lands, an awakening of rapturous memories: the glow of candles and lanterns lit with his mother and grandmother on the eve of the full moon during the Yi Peng festival, a Lanna tradition; candles lit in offering to Phra Ratanatrai (The Triple Gem of Buddhism), or the spirits of his ancestors, or resident spirits of the land and sacred objects; and simply, light seeping through a canopy of leaves and into the shade underneath in different places.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Noppanan is driven to present the landscape as a personification of humans. He soulfully develops his visual arts with commitment.  The visual combination of leaves, hills, light, shadow and air carries a certain message in a similar way to poetry. Human beings are not just observers of the world but an integral part of it.

BIOGRAPHY

Noppanan Thannaree was born on January 31, 1988, in Chiang Rai province. He completed his studies at the undergraduate and master’s degree levels in Thai Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Silpakorn University. He currently works as a full-time artist.

After completing his initial education, Noppanan began presenting his works of ink Chinese landscape paintings on paper that had gone through a repeated line-drawing process using a self-made bamboo brush technique. By drawing inspiration from the shapes of trees, leaves, and the basic structure of natural landscapes, which are simple and fundamental, Noppanan’s artistic philosophy mainly comes from Buddhist and Eastern philosophies. It aims to establish a connection and maintain a balance between individuality and nature, which influences his identity and thoughts.

In the following years, Noppanan attempted to study and expand the boundaries of his thoughts, making them free from formats and modes of thinking that were influenced not only by religious beliefs but also by focusing on the significance of linking his artistry to international spirituality and consciousness, along with the social context and contemporary culture. He utilizes a variety of diverse artistic techniques as a means of presentation.

Currently, Noppanan consistently creates artworks of fine arts. He has resided in Nakhon Pathom and his hometown of Chiang Rai since the year 2013 until the present day.
