ARTIST STATEMENT

P7’s practice is rooted in a fascination with the objects, images, and fragments that populate everyday life. Rather than treating them as symbols that require interpretation, he employs them as vehicles for expressing heightened emotions, the subconscious, and the pulsing energy within him.

Central to P7’s approach is a balance between creativity, technique and design. He incorporates subjects from photographs, such as sweets, food, living creatures, and his own design work into surreal compositions that layer harmony and juxtaposition to provoke unexpected emotions and offer alternative ways of seeing and making sense of the world.

Formally, P7’s work oscillates between design and fine art. Realism, character art, and his distinctive visual language coexist in his paintings and sculptures. He does not reconcile these disparate elements into a seamless whole, giving his works a sense of playfulness, intensity, and a sense of estrangement or contradiction. The viewer’s experience unfolds within an ambivalent terrain suspended between imagination and uncertainty.

The composition of images and objects in P7’s works draws in the viewers’ gaze. The atmosphere of the exhibition space itself is integral to the work. Viewers take on an active role as they explore paintings and sculptures within a space, and form interpretations based on their own experiences. In this sense, the artwork is not merely contained within itself, but continues to expand through the unique experiences of each person who encounters it.

BIOGRAPHY

P7 (b. 1969, Bangkok) is a Thai artist and designer who is well-established in Thailand’s contemporary art scene. His practice spans painting, sculpture, design and urban art, and is distinguished by an interdisciplinary synthesis of Fine Art, Design, and Urban Art into a unified visual language.

Prior to his career as an independent artist, P7 developed a strong foundation in realist art from an early age. This interest evolved through years of practice and professional experience in illustration, which began at Tao 65, where he created ‘Super Realistic’ artworks for three years. This formative period sharpened his observation skills and deepened his understanding of detail, light, shadow and composition, building upon the technical foundations he had established earlier. Then, he became an art director at Massive Advertising for one year before embarking on a career as a full-time independent artist in 1997.

P7’s background in realist drawing and design profoundly shaped his visual framework, informing his approach to form, perspective, and the relationship between detail and the overall composition. These influences gradually evolved into the distinctive artistic language that continues to define his practice today.

Since 1998, P7 has exhibited work extensively in Thailand and internationally, including the United States, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom. His works have appeared in galleries, museums, and public spaces alike, reflecting a practice that moves beyond institutional art contexts.

In addition to making art, P7 has actively participated in collaborative projects with cultural organizations and institutions both in Thailand and abroad. Notable projects include the Bangkok Art Biennale (2020); his roles as founder, curator and artist of the For 1 (2010) and For 2 (2011) projects at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC); Bangkok Street Urban Culture (2018), organized by the Embassy of France and the Goethe-Institut Bangkok; and Bukruk (2013), a public art initiative supported by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Thailand.

P7 has also worked with numerous leading international and local brands and organizations, including Shake Shack (Emsphere), Onitsuka Tiger, Vans, Vespa, Converse, Adidas, Pro-Keds, DC, Yamaha, Honda, DTAC, True, Samsung, G-Shock, Jaspal, GQ, Theatre Bangkok, Mrigadayavan Palace, and the UOB × BTS project. His collaborations extend to major retail and cultural destinations such as CentralWorld, Central Chiang Mai, Central Pattaya, Central Phuket, Central EastVille, Robinson, Siam Center, and Siam Discovery. Encompassing mural art, product design, and experimental design projects, these collaborations exemplify an art practice that continuously operates at the intersection of art, contemporary culture, and urban spaces.

The cornerstone of P7’s practice is a commitment to a hand-made, freestyle creative process. His works are developed through sketching, painting, and constructing physical forms by hand. This approach imbues each piece with a unique character and makes it impossible to replicate, while preserving the traces of its creation at a certain point in time.
