ARTIST STATEMENT

“SPRING CULTURE” highlights the vibrant scenes of local Thai traditions that celebrate major events in one’s life. The get-together of the family, friends, neighbors, and the community to witness the event and to support its group members is common in every culture in the world.

Being raised and growing up in the Northeastern region of Thailand, Nilraya experienced the beauty of the festivity and the bond it creates. She also travels to different parts of the country to observe divergent celebrations in accordance with the local people’s tradition and culture. These traditions and rituals are part of our heritage and they will be passed on to the next generations.

Nilraya depicts a snapshot of these convivial moments using the unconventional medium of embroidery instead of painting or photography. With her talents in needle work, Nilraya uses various sizes of thread with a vibrant colour palette to record what she sees onto a piece of fabric. Symbolically the threads also represent her connection and bond with the place and the joy she experienced through these festivities.

Inspired by the dynamism of current culture and fashion, Nilraya creates artwork that expresses joy, fun and brilliance.
Her ‘joie de vivre’ mentality shines through her creation with the use of mixed media including threads embroidery and sewing on various types of fabric. The overlapping of materials in wavy, curves, zigzag and straight lines make reference to high spirited and merriment in life.
