Gaze

August 15, 2015

“Gaze” explores portraiture and the human face through a combination of threads and photography. Hayun Choi’s current body of work features portraits of family, friends and strangers in Seoul and London. She builds several layers of small strands of threads on thin fabric to create a visual rendering of a person.

Looking through the thin fabric, the viewer will see the actual photograph of the same person gazing out from the background. Her work depicts the subject in two states: being gazed at and gazing directly at the viewer. Hayun Choi experiments the application of textile media and threads while presenting them as if they were strokes of a paint brush.
