The Backdrop of My Life

Standing before great mountains- strong and steadfast yet serene and gentle- are the rainforests of the South, filled with towering trees that foster cooler temperatures in their shade. The chill is tempered by shafts of sunlight, piercing through the canopy of leaves to bring life-giving warmth to the forest’s depths, like the trees that bend and arch in search of it. Dappled light dances above the darkness of the forest floor, evoking an environment of simplicity and peace, suffused with a feeling of contentment.

Each of us is a part of nature, and exists within a web of interdependent relationships. Therefore, being in nature can influence our feelings and perceptiveness, when the trees, the earth, the sky, and light and shadow open us up to the presence of beauty and tranquility, cultivating stillness and mindfulness within.

“My life began here”, in the place where I was born and raised: Ban Ton Rhiang in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. My life begins with the land, the forest, the mountains, the sky and sunlight, which have shaped who I am in body and spirit. I have experiences and memories woven throughout the forests: they are the backdrop of my life. When I look back, and once again see the first light of dawn, the surrounding mountains, the clouds and the sky, I recall a peacefulness that wasn’t silent. Much is in motion, the sounds of the forest: the wind, rain, creature and ever-moving shadows. It feels like a homecoming, a return to the source of who I am and my happiness.

BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Kanokpon Somchua (b. 1996) holds a master’s degree from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. Kanokpon’s worldview and way of life is profoundly shaped by the natural beauty of his hometown. Eager to recalibrate and deepen his relationship with himself, he later returned, a move which laid the groundwork for his art practice, a creative process founded on honing his awareness of himself and the interconnectedness of all natural life. Close study of nature has opened up a corridor into the nature of the self, allowing him to perceive its inner workings with greater clarity. Imbued with these insights, his art has deepened his awareness of the fundamental relationships between him and his surroundings, and reflects his inner thoughts, experiences, feelings and ways of making meaning through the formal rhythms of the branches, trees and forests.
