ARTIST STATEMENT

In “PINK” series, Kachecheewa presents a collection of thirteen portraits of a woman with the use of the color pink in place of skin tones. He creates an illusion of flatness by removing the dimension. The artist uses found images borrowed from different sources such as cartoons or action figures.

In each of the paintings the viewer will notice that the eyes of the subject are either out of frame or looking to the side, this also contributes to the artist’s attempt to access another dimension of truth, without referring the original image.

In most of the artwork there is an object that has been added and appears unnatural or inappropriate, such as the gun, the cigarettes, the sunglasses, the black hand or the helmets. These objects re-builds and challenges the reality of the image. The use of the pale pink and purple color tones with the soft feminine features further draws attention to these bolder, darker ‘out of place’ components. Another interesting feature present in a few of the pieces is the small black dot under each eye of the subject. When first looking at the face the viewer is briefly confused about where to look as the dots can distract from the placement of the real eyes. Similarly to the mismatched objects, these dots create a surrealist quality to the works.
